Lakota Country Times

About the Times
The revival of the Lakota Country Times was born because of the drastic need for a newspaper that was unbiased, professionally prepared, honest and balanced. Too often we find the local Indian newspapers at war with each other and at odds with journalistic ethics. The standards of the old Lakota Times in 1981 were geared to defend the rights of the Lakota, stand up for the People's right to know, and to inform, educate and provide the Lakota People with a forum for their comments without fear of censorship. Those are the goals of the reborn Lakota Country Times. We are a newspaper of the people, by the people and for the people.

Amanda Takes War Bonnet, former editor of Lakota Times and Indian Country Today, is an award winning editor and will be at the helm as Publisher and Editor. Ms. Takes War Bonnet believes in the journalism creed of many successful publications and has strived to promote so in her journalism career and will continue to do so with the debut of Lakota Country Times. The Lakota Country Times will be a public trust; that all connected with it are, to the full measure of their responsibility, trustees for the public; that acceptance of a lesser service than the public service is betrayal of this trust.

Today the Lakota communities of the Pine Ridge and Oglala Lakota Nation are striving to preserve and promote their rich cultural and spiritual heritage of our people. The Lakota Country Times will promote cultural awareness and news that is important to the benefit of the Lakota and to the non-Indian citizens of the areas the newspaper serves.

She believes that clear thinking and clear statement, accuracy and fairness are fundamental and that suppression of the news, for any consideration other than the welfare of society, is indefensible.

The Lakota Country Times office is located in Martin, South Dakota, and serves the areas of and around the Pine Ridge and Rosebud Reservations, northern Nebraska and the Black Hills area.
