Little Eagle man's trial set for officer shooting
SIOUX FALLS (AP) - A Little Eagle man charged in the nonfatal shooting of a Bureau of Indian Affairs police officer is scheduled to stand trial in February.
Forty-three-year-old Kelly C. Ward pleaded not guilty to a new indictment charging him with three assault counts and two gun violations for the Sept. 10 shooting of Sgt. Louis Poitra on the Standing Rock Reservation.
Authorities say the officer was responding to a domestic violence call in Little Eagle when Ward shot Poitra in the leg and then shot himself.
