Girls basketball season starts this week, boys next week

PINE RIDGE RESERVATION - The running started with a vengeance this week as the girls basketball season got underway officially on Monday, Nov. 24 with the first games set for Dec. 9.

Dusty LeBeau returns as head coach in Pine Ridge, they will be looking at dethroning Bennett County as District 14A champs and moving on to regions and state in Watertown. Jerome LeBeau returns for his second season as head coach at Red Cloud; they will be looking at going to State for the third year in a row.

Ted Standing Soldier Jr. returns for his second year at Little Wound and he hopes to benefit from the summer work and have his team in the mix in District 14A. Cory Roberts will be back at St. Francis while Bob Boyd will continue as head girls coach at Todd County.

Boys basketball officially gets underway on Monday, Dec. 1 with the first games set for Friday, Dec. 12. Bill Pourier returns to Pine Ridge, Matt Rama is back for his sixth year at Red Cloud and Rob Mendoza returns for another year at Little Wound. Sonny Farmer takes over from Mike Hammer at Todd County with Rich Crow Eagle returning at St. Francis.

Despite losing seven seniors, Red Cloud was given the number one seed at the upcoming Lakota Nation tourney, they hope to make another run at the State A tourney this year. White River is the number two seed, they have Eldon Marshall back as coach and will try to defend their State B championship in March without having the services of Louie Krogman.
