Bill to examine new office of Native Affairs defeated
      PIERRE — On Wednesday, Feb. 18, Ed Iron Cloud III, District 27, introduced a bill to create a taskforce to study feasibility of creating a cabinet level department that will identify benefits from a closer working relationship between the executive and legislative branches and tribal governments. Damage assessment planned after White River drops
      PIERRE (AP) — Authorities in south central South Dakota say once the water level drops, they will assess the damage from this week's White River flooding. Mellette County authorities are helping tribal officials monitor floodwaters that rose during recent warm weather. River ice broke up, causing ice jams.

Janis, Colhoff file voting rights lawsuit
      PINE RIDGE - The American Civil Liberties Union says two Pine Ridge women have filed a federal lawsuit claiming they were illegally removed from the voting rolls and asking that their voting rights be restored. In a release, the ACLU says the names of Kim Colhoff and Eileen Janis were improperly removed from the rolls last year because they had felony convictions.

Award offered for information on missing Wakpala teens
      WAKPALA - The grandmother of a Wakpala girl missing for more than a week has posted a $1,000 reward for information on the whereabouts of the teenager. Mariah Roundtree, 17, and her boyfriend Jalen Mellette, 16, were last seen on Sunday, Feb.

Strong Heart Society distributes shoes
      PINE RIDGE - Last month, more than 56 boxes of shoes were given out to the public from Richard Janis Sr.'s house at Crazy Horse housing in Pine Ridge. The donations were made possible by the Strong Heart Society, Duane Martin, Earl Denny, Robert 'Snuffy' Grey, Mona Perty, Moses Brings Plenty and Dan Shehan.

LWMS begins intervention classes dur ing homeroom
      KYLE — The Little Wound Middle School has recently began a series of intervention and prevention classes that are held during the homeroom period. Each week, a different topic will be introduced to the students. The first week the topic of bully was discussed with students, the second week was the issue of gangs.

Five LWHS seniors honored
      KYLE — Five Little Wound High School seniors were honored during a home game recently and will be formally honored during the annual Kiyaska Waniyetu Wacipi that will be held on Feb. 21 and 22 at Kyle. The honor is made by Little Wound High School and the South Dakota High School Activities Association.

American Horse School Board Promotes Family Literacy
      This month parents are invited into their child's classroom to read or be read too. The child will then receive a certificate for a free book at the Scholastic Book Fair which will be set up in the American Horse School Library March 2nd-March 12th.       KYLE — The Oyate Teca Project in Kyle and the Oyate Networking Project in Mission are taking new enrollments. The centers are affiliated with Christian Children's Fund, which finds sponsors for children from ages birth to 12 years old. The centers oversee the sponsorship and also offer activities to children and families in their centers.

      PIERRE (AP) - A proposal to let voters decide if South Dakota's constitution should declare English the state's official language died in the Senate. Senators voted 20-14 on Thursday to kill SJR2, which proposed a constitutional amendment making English the state's official language.
