      PINE RIDGE — Red Cloud Indian School Sophomore Alex Merdanian has been named a National Scholar by the Congressional Youth Leadership Council, and will attend the council's national young leaders conference in Washington, D.C. at the beginning of April.

      HOT SPRINGS - From the Badlands to Alcatraz, a film chronicling an intensive swim training program, will be featured at the Red Rock River Resort in Hot Springs on Saturday, March 14, at 7 p.m. The film recounts the experiences of five young Lakota during the September 2005 San Francisco Pathstar Pine Ridge Alcatraz swim program.

Theft conviction upheld against Janis
      SIOUX FALLS — A federal appeals court upheld the theft conviction of a former Oglala Sioux Tribe official suing the state because the crime kept her from voting in the November election. Former tribal vice president Eileen Janis was found guilty in 2007 of theft from a tribal organization.

Exposure suspected in Wakpala teens' deaths
      PIERRE — An investigator says two Wakpala teenagers found dead after a two-week disappearance may have died of exposure to the weather. The bodies of 17-year-old Mariah Roundtree and 16-yearold Jalen Mellette were found Sunday a few miles from their vehicle on the Standing Rock Indian Reservation in north central South Dakota.

Group protests Whiteclay beer sales at Lincoln
4 million cans of beers are sold a year
      LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — About two dozen protesters gathered at the Nebraska state Capitol to protest beer sales to American Indians in the northwest Nebraska village of Whiteclay. Activist Frank LaMere said during the gathering on Monday that allowing beer to be sold to members of the nearby Pine Ridge Reservation in southwest South Dakota is unconscionable.
