Lou Tyon, a member of the Oglala Sioux tribe of the Pine Ridge Reservation, also hopes the Olympics can help break a cycle he's faced his entire life.

      KYLE - Karlene Hunter and Mark Tilsen, who run Native American Natural Foods in Kyle, launched the all-natural buffalo-and-cranberry Tanka Bar in October 2007 and have since expanded the product line and the number of outlets selling it to 3,000.

Food stamps to increase April 1
      PIERRE - Gov. Mike Rounds said most lowincome South Dakota households will receive additional food assistance as a result of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. Beginning April 1, the maximum monthly benefit will increase based on household size.

Police think acts were racially motivated
      RAPID CITY (AP) - Rapid City police said they expect to file charges against four juveniles for what they consider racially motivated acts. The white teens were in a car when they reportedly shot a BB gun pistol at eight American Indians and threw urine on one of them. In a later incident, another Indian was shot in the back with a BB gun. No one was hurt.

Endangered Language Fund partners with RCIS for Lakota curriculum
      PINE RIDGE — The Endangered Language Fund has recognized the critical need for the revitalization of the Lakota language by awarding a three-year grant of $15,000 to Red Cloud Indian School. The grant will aid the school in developing a common curriculum and enhanced program for Lakota language classes offered to students in K-12 .

Red Cross helps flooding victims on Standing Rock
      STANDING ROCK (AP)- The Black Hills Chapter of the American Red Cross has sent volunteers to the northern South Dakota town of McLaughlin to set up shelter for 30 to 80 evacuees from flooding. The call for help came Sunday morning. Volunteers and emergency supplies were lined up within four hours.

Pacheco honored for 15 years of service
      MISSION — On March 18, the Oyate Networking Project of Mission and the Oyate Teca Project of Kyle honored Juanita Pacheco of Rosebud for her 15 years of service to the project. She worked with the children and their families of the Rosebud reservation as a home visitor for the Oyate Networking Project.

Red Cloud and Little Wound School call off classes for funerals
      Red Cloud Indian School officials suspended classes last Thursday so students, staff and family could mourn the loss of 2008 graduate Casey Zimiga. Zimiga, who was an 18- year-old freshman at Chadron State College this year, died in a car accident March 12 west of Pine Ridge.
