~JAMES LEROY CHRISTENSEN, SR.~

ABBEVILLE, ALABAMA-James Leroy Christensen, Sr., 78, , formerly of Moline, died Thursday, July 30, 2009, at his home.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am, Friday, August 7, 2009, at Rafferty Funeral Home, 2111-1st St A, Moline. Visitation will be 6-8pm, Thursday at the funeral home. Burial will be at Moline Memorial Park. Memorials can be made to American Diabetes Association.

James was born September 20, 1931 in Lakota, North Dakota, the son of Chris and Myrtle Renslow Christensen. He formerly lived in the Moline, Illinois area, Bloomington, Illinois and Dothan, Alabama before moving to Abbeville in 2002.

James married R. Louise Thorkveen, daughter of Bert and Josephine Thorkveen, on June 20, 1952 in Minnesota. Together they raised 12 children. She preceded him in death on December 12, 2000.

Mr. Christensen retired from General Telephone Company in 1991 after 24 years of service. He was a member of the Christ United Methodist Church in Moline.

Survivors include his second wife, Cindy Christensen, whom he married in 2002; his children and their spouses, James Jr. (Chris) Christensen, Dothan, AL, Mike Christensen, New-Milford, IL, Kathy Myers, Silvis, Brenda (Ted) Borkgren, Coal-Valley, Cindy (John) Earman, Vero Beach, FL, Pam (Dennis) Vance, Grapevine, TX, Tim Christensen, Normal, IL, Tom (Carol) Christensen, Bloomington, IL, Debra (Jody) Skeeters, Humboldt, IA, Paul (Erika) Christensen, Rock Island and Jenny Shepard, Humboldt, IA; 29 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren and a brother-in-law, Tilford Thorkveen, Beaumont, TX. He was preceded in death by a son, Mark Christensen on June 1, 1983 and three brothers, George, Steven and Ward Christensen.
