Prairie Edge Review

Welcome to the 2010 Black Hills Stock Show and Rodeo!

Prairie Edge features a huge variety of intriguing books about the Native American and Cowboy experiences in Western South Dakota. One of the newest local publica tions is Buffalo Gap Frontier: Crazy Horse to No Water to the Roundup. Author Bernie Keating from Buffalo Gap is the grandson of a pioneer who came to the Black Hills in 1890 to work in the Cuyahogo Gold Mine. Co authors are Tom Norman who ranches in the Cheyenne River Country (his grandmother was an early pioneer on the frontier), and Pat Cuny who ranches on the Pine Ridge Reservation (he is Lakota whose ancestors include French Indian fur traders on the western frontier).

Buffalo Gap Frontier is about the pioneers, ranchers, and Oglala Lakota who all shared the same landscape in a ten uous peace.

Here’s a quote from the back of the book:

“…The mountain carving of Chief Crazy Horse came into view. I parked the car and Tom, Pat and I found a granite ledge to sit on.

“Why Crazy Horse?” I asked.

…Pat responded, “That man up there riding a horse across Paha Sapa is made of stone. He represents our culture, the emblem of a brave people who struggled here. They may have lost, but they fought for their land. Maybe someday they will see their White Buffalo. Why Crazy Horse? Be cause he is our promise of hope for better times to come.”
