Little Wound starts slow but finishes strong for two wins at Hunkpapa Classic

McLAUGHLIN – After a 10 day lay-off, Little Wound struggled in the first half against McLaughlin in the first game of the Hunkpapa Classic last Wednesday in McLaughlin down 28-25 at the half but came out in the third to hold their opponents to just four points in the third quarter to pick up their 7th win of the season 55-45.

Little Wound was led by Paula Yellow Boy’s 15 points, sophomore Kateri Weston chipped in 10 points. Tariq Brown Otter led McLaughlin with 19 points, Shania Jamerson added 10 points.

On Thursday, Standing Rock led the Lady Mustangs 12-11 after the first quarter, while Little Wound bounced back to lead 27-20 at the half, they were only up 41-37 after three but once again stepped up the defense, holding Standing Rock to just five fourth quarter points for a 60-42 win. Little Wound had a hot hand from three point range, knocking down 10 threes. Miracle Spotted Bear topped the Lady Mustangs with 17 points, Weston added 14 and Janay Jumping Eagle helped with 10. Keisha Baby led Standing Rock with 26.

Little Wound has opened the season 8-0, they travel to Kadoka on Thursday, play Northwestern Saturday in Redfield at their Classic and go to Bennett County on Tuesday.

“We started both games in McLaughlin slow, we struggled to find a rhythm,” said Lyle LeBeau,Little Wound head coach, “sophomore Kateri Weston played well, both games, Miracle stepped up and we worked on having both Paula Yellow Boy and Jaycinda Blacksmith on the floor at the same time.”

Pine Ridge comes out on top of seesaw battle with Red Cloud

Playing their third game over the break, Pine Ridge came out strong going up 13-5 over Red Cloud, the Lady Saders rallied with a 12-0 run going up 17-13 only to see the Lady Thorpes reel off 11 unanswered points; Pine Ridge held an unsafe 28-25 lead at the half but as they dominated the boards 34-19 they were able to survive lead changes in the second half to take a hard fought 59-57 win over Red Cloud Tuesday night in Pine Ridge.

Both teams struggled with turnovers, Pine Ridge tallied 36, Red Cloud had 28. Taysha Big Crow scored 15 points down low with nine rebounds while Samantha Richards hit 15 points mixing three threes with three twos. Red Cloud senior Cate Knutson led all scorers with 23 points while pulling down 10 rebounds; Alanna Holiday finished with 10 points. Red Cloud is 4-3 now and hosts Belle Fourche on Saturday.

Pine Ridge splits pair of games at Hunkpapa Classic

McLAUGHLIN – Following a 10 day layoff after LNI, Pine Ridge opened the Hunkpapa Classic Wednesday against Standing Rock, mixing an inside game with Taysha Big Crow, 21 points and Shyann Grey Grass 16 points and an outside game with Jasmine Thompson 20 points, the Lady Thorpes handled Standing Rock 68-61. Syanne Young Bird led Standing Rock with 18 points, Keisha Baby had 17.

On the second day, Pine Ridge struggled, nine different players scored but only freshman Tayshaw Big Crow was in double figures with 20 points as McLaughlin clobbered Pine Ridge 71-47. Tariq Brown Otter led the way for the Mustangs with 16 points, Tiarra Flying Horse finished with 14 and Keira Smeichel chipped in 10.

Pine Ridge is now 7-2 and travels to Little Wound Thursday, Lower Brule on Saturday, Jan. 14 and Winner on the 19th.
