LAKOTA COUNTRY - The 2017 high school boys football season started on August 18 and wrapped up for this area in the second round of playoffs in late October.

We saw Pine Ridge bounce back from back to back 0-8 seasons, finish the regular season at 7-2 and make the 11A playoffs, losing to Dakota Valley for a 7-3 year. Todd County went into the season thinking it would be a rebuilding year only to finish 7-2 and earn the #4 seed in 11A and host Milbank Area in the first round of the playoffs finishing 7-3 on the season. Red Cloud started the year 2-2 then reeled off four straight wins, earn the #2 seed, won in the first round of the 11B playoffs then lost to Wessington Springs for a 7-3 season record.

There were any number of outstanding individual performances throughout the season. Todd County’s junior running back Mark Rogers put together several outstanding running games along the lines of two time Harlan Hill winner Danny Woodhead who played his college ball for Chadron State College before moving onto the NFL. Little Wound senior Tyrone Pourier ended up as an all around man for the Mustangs playing quarterback, wide receiver, running back and linebacker. Pine Ridge defensive back Darrell DJ Vitalis led the Region in interceptions and was one of the top tacklers for the Thorpes. Red Cloud junior Ale Rama topped individual game performances with 445 all purpose yards against Bennett County in late September, 172 rushing yards, 144 passing yards, 29 receiving yards, 11 punt return yards and a 95 yard interception return for a touchdown.

The Defensive player of the year is Pine Ridge senior linebacker Cecil Apple who played each game with a focus on stopping opposing running backs and quarterbacks, who as a senior provided a positive role model for younger players, leading a team defense by example and leadership.

On the offensive side of the ball, Red Cloud junior quarterback Alejandro Rama was the Offensive player of the year, each game, determining what was needed to get the win, running the ball or passing and implementing the attack with a creativity and sense of perseverance that got the job done.
