Oglala Lakota County School Board Election Up In The Air


BATESLAND - The Oglala Lakota County school board election was held Tuesday in conjunction with the SD primary election; in unofficial returns Tuesday night, Deb Blue Bird was the top vote getter with 393 votes(25%), Tom Conroy was next with 338(21%), Maurice Twiss had 337(21%), Todd O’Bryan 287(18%) and incumbent Dr. Richard Zephier 230(15%). After 20 provisional ballots were counted, Blue Bird 397, Tom Conroy 339, Maurice Twiss 339, Todd O’Bryan 288 and Zephier 231.

With two vacancies on the school board, Blue Bird has earned one of the three year terms but there is now a tie for the second seat between Conroy and Twiss. Normally, if a candidate is within two percent of a winning candidate, they can request a recount, with a tie vote, a recount is automatic.

The school board is set to meet June 26, to complete the canvas then a tentative date of June 28 has been set for a recount to take place in the courtroom of the Fall River County courthouse in Hot Springs.

The new school board members are set to be seated at a meeting on July 10, the three remaining members include Bryan Brewer, chairman, Robert Two Crow, Vice chair and Chuck Conroy. Angie Eagle Bull, long time member, chose not to run for re-election and Zephier was not voted back in.

The Oglala Lakota County school district has four preschool-8 schools in Wolf Creek, Batesland, Rockyford and Red Shirt with a Virtual High School operating district wide with an overall enrollment of close to 1,650 students. The board has recently committed to a $13 million expansion and renovation of Wolf Creek School and a new $18 million Career Technical Education high school at Wolf Creek to open in the fall of 2020.
