Summers About Gone, Schools Ready For New School Year

LAKOTA NATION - It seems like just yesterday that high schools were honoring their graduating classes and Oglala Lakota College recognized their 2018 grads but it’s time to look ahead and get ready for a new school year.

“This is an exciting time, every time a new school year is starting, its exciting,” said Dayna Brave Eagle, director of the OST Tribal Education Agency,“we have a lot of work to do, both academically and dealing with new laws; we still have a lot of challenges, we have to push, lobby and argue for enough financial resources to both maintain and improve our facilities, we’re talking about providing a safe environment for our children, and we need to do a better job not only certifying our new teachers but preparing our young people so they are better able to make it through the certifying process.”

Registration is ongoing for Little Wound School, in the Elementary School k-8 orientation is Aug. 20, in the Middle School 6th grade orientation is Aug. 20, 7th grade orientation is Aug. 21, 8th grade orientation is Aug. 22 with all of Middle School starting Aug. 23; in the high school freshman orientation is Aug. 20, sophomore orientation is Aug. 21, junior orientation is Aug. 22 with senior orientation set for Aug. 23 with school for All high school students on Friday, Aug. 24.

Registration is ongoing for Pine Ridge School 8am-3:30pm daily; high school starts Aug. 15 while elementary staff return Aug. 13 with students returning Aug. 16.

At Red Cloud, K-9 starts school on Monday, Aug. 20 along with students at OLL, high school students 10-12 start Aug. 21.

American Horse School is registering now and all students K-8 start Wednesday, Aug. 22.

Loneman School in Oglala is registering now, for all students K-8, the first day of school is Monday, Aug. 20; students planning to participate in sports need a physical. Melissa Blacksmith is the new principal.

At Oglala Lakota County Schools, Wolf Creek, Batesland, Rockyford and Red Shirt, registration started on Monday, Aug. 6 for those students who did not preregister last spring, classes start Wednesday, Aug. 15.

Pahin Sinte Owayawa in Porcupine is registering throughout the district and welcomes K-8 students back to school on Monday, Aug. 20.

White River School registered students this week and welcomes back students K-8 on Tuesday, Aug. 21.

Wounded Knee District School in Manderson is registering students for all grades, first day of school is Monday, Aug. 27.

Crazy Horse School is registering students at All grade levels at the present time, first day of school K-12 is Monday, Aug. 20.

Fall semester registration for Oglala Lakota College ends on Friday, Aug. 17 with the first day of fall semester classes scheduled for Monday, Aug. 27.
