ROSEBUD WILL ELECT TRIBAL TREASURER, SECRETARY




ROSEBUD INDIAN RESERVATION – The Rosebud Sioux Tribe’s Election Board has announced the timeline to elect candidates to the constitutional officer seats of Tribal Treasurer and Tribal Secretary.

The Election Board will begin accepting nominating affidavits for the two seats on Wednesday, May 1, 2019 at 8am. The deadline for affidavits is Friday, May 31, 2019 at 5pm. Each candidate must meet qualifications set by the Election Board which include residency and proof of enrollment in the Rosebud Sioux Tribe. Candidates must also pay a $300 filing fee by money order. A valid identification card and fingerprints are required of all candidates. Candidates are required to pass a criminal background check to be placed on the ballot.

Tribal citizens who wish to vote in the 2019 Primary Election of Constitutional officers must register in person by Friday, July 12, 2019. The deadline to register to vote in the 2019 General Election is Thursday, August 8, 2019.

The treasurer and secretary positions are elected at-large by registered voters of the Rosebud Sioux Tribe who live within the original boundaries of the Rosebud Reservation. Voting by mail is not allowed. The elected candidates will each serve a two-year term. Elected tribal officials are limited to serving two consecutive terms.

The Rosebud Sioux Tribal council representatives, along with the Tribal President and Vice-President, are all elected to serve three-year terms. In 2020, ten council seats are up for election. Terms expiring in 2020 include the tribal council seats from Black Pipe, Grass Mountain, Spring Creek, Ideal, Parmelee, Two Strike, Okreek, Milks Camp, Butte Creek and Soldier Creek.

The other ten council seats will be open for election in 2021. Those terms include the tribal council seats from Antelope, Bull Creek, Corn Creek, He Dog, Horse Creek, Ring Thunder, Rosebud, St. Francis, Swift Bear and Upper Cut Meat. The Tribal President and Vice President elections will also be held in 2021. All elected officials are limited to serving two consecutive terms.

The 2019 Primary Election will be held on Thursday, July 25, 2019 in designated polling places. The General Election will be held on Thursday, August 22, 2019. Nominating affidavits may be picked up and submitted to the Election office located in the lower east wing of the Tribal Annex Building in Rosebud, SD. The office is open Monday through Friday from 8am to 5pm.
