RED HAWK HONORED AT NATIONAL CEMETERY

Prior to Memorial Day, in small cemeteries across the nation, surviving members of the 589th Engineer Battalion Association – Vietnam will conduct flower placing ceremonies to honor each of the 26 individuals who died while serving with the unit in Vietnam.

Among those lost was Jesse Milton Red Hawk, of Pine Ridge, South Dakota. A ceremony for Red Hawk starts at 12:00 noon. on Saturday, May 25, 2019 at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis.

“These flower placing ceremonies have been in the making for nearly 50 years,” said Perry Blanchfield, Association Chairman. “It is time we put aside the stigma of having fought in Vietnam to honor those who honored us by making the supreme sacrifice.”

Mike Gilbertson of Dell Rapids, South Dakota will lead the Honor Our Fallen ceremony for Red Owl at Black Hills National Cemetery.

Red Hawk, 20, was lost in Ninh Thuan Province, South Vietnam on November 10, 1968. He served with A Company of the 589th Engineer Battalion. Survivors include his brother John Red Hawk of Mandan, ND, his brother Melvin (Buddy) Red Hawk, and two sisters, Gail and Leota, all of Pine Ridge.
