CLIMATE CHANGE GROUP FOR ROSEBUD

ROSEBUD RESERVATION – The Rosebud Sioux Tribe has established a group to address how climate change has and will continue to affect tribal land and local citizens.

President Rodney Bordeaux appointed several program directors to develop a resolution for tribal council approval in response to the request. The group is authorized to request funding from the Bureau of Indian Affairs or any federal, state or national resource.

“There are many reports on adverse climate change that may affect our tribe as well as the Oceti Sakowin and other tribes,” wrote President Bordeaux in a memorandum. “There may be severe weather changes such as droughts, tornadoes and flooding we need to prepare for.”

The group was created in response to a letter signed by several US Senators, all members of the Indian Affairs Committee and the Special Committee on the Climate Crisis, seeking tribal input on how climate change is affecting American Indian, Alaska Native and Native Hawaiian communities.

The July 10 letter invited leaders to send comments focused on the following areas: (1) Policies, regulations and programs which have proven particularly useful in assisting communities in mitigating and responding to climate change impacts. (2) Policies, regulations and programs which have proven particularly useful in assisting communities in mitigating and responding to climate change impacts. (3) Actions or policies which federal agencies could take within existing authorities to improve climate change mitigation and resilience in communities. (4) New policy recommendations to Congress to consider to improve climate change resilience in communities, reduce emissions of heat-trapping pollution, increase the development and availability of renewable resources or capture or off-set emissions of heat-trapping pollution.

Members of the group include Phil Two Eagle (Director, Sicangu Lakota Treaty Office), Syed Huq (Director, Water Resources), Ivan Crow Eagle (Director, Environmental Office), Paula Antoine (Director, Sicangu Oyate Land Office), Ken Haukaas (Forestry Department), Frank Vanderwalker (Director, Game, Fish & Parks), Tony Rogers (Director, Tribal Utility Commission), Robert Oliver (Director, Safety of Dams) and Ken LaDeaux (Director, Sicangu Resource Development).

The group held their initial meeting on August 29 and appointed Phil Two Eagle as Chairman. Discussion was held on drafting the tribal resolution, strategic planning, along with creating a mission and vision statement for the group. The next meeting will be held on Tuesday, September 10 at the Water Resources conference room.
