DOUGLAS JAMES FERGUSON

OCTOBER 9, 1960 – NOVEMBER 1, 2019

Douglas James Ferguson was born October 9, 1960 on the Pine Ridge Reservation to Franklyn James Ferguson and Gladys Pearl (O’Rourke) Ferguson and was raised in Kyle, SD. Doug made his journey to the Spirit World on November 1, 2019 at the Rapid City Regional Hospital Hospice of the Hills in Rapid City, SD.

Doug went to Kyle Day School and graduated from Little Wound High School in 1980. Doug played many sports, including baseball and helped his team make it to the playoffs, but was too young, due to an age requirement rule, to play in the tournament and sat in the dugout and cheered his team on. He played basketball for both Kyle Day School and Little Wound High School. During his senior year his team made it to the State finals with Dave Archambault as their coach.

Doug was a “Jack of all trades”; he was a painter, a mechanic, and a ranch hand throughout his life. Doug painted many facilities, including college centers, the Suanne Big Crow facility, the Pine Ridge Chamber of Commerce building in Kyle, Our Lady of Sorrows Church, the Lakota Fund building, residential homes and local businesses, family race cars and the Rapid City Airport.

Doug worked at Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church for 15 years and retired in June 2018 due to his health. For over 30 years, Doug took care of the St. Stephen’s cemetery in Kyle and the St. Barbara’s Catholic cemetery by the river. After the original St. Barbara’s church burned down, Doug had a goal to build a small replica of the church, which he did with help from friends and family. He had many hobbies; he was an artist and enjoyed drawing and painting. He enjoyed playing horseshoes and was a master at it. He loved music, all kinds of music and enjoyed learning to play the guitar. He enjoyed watching old shows, including Mash, Andy Griffith, Gunsmoke and the Twilight Zone. Doug was a simple man, he didn’t like anyone making a fuss over him, but was very humble and gracious when they did. Doug appreciated everything that anyone ever did for him. Doug was a humble, kind, generous person who would never hesitate to help someone if he could. Doug was loved dearly by his family and friends and will be greatly missed.

Doug is survived by his wife, Carrie Ann Brewer Ferguson and they have two sons, Franklin James Ferguson of Kyle, SD and Lance Brewer of Albuquerque, NM; four daughters, Penny Lynn Santana (Edgar) of Rapid City, SD, Alicen Rose Ferguson, Loretta Marie Ferguson and Tiffiny Garnette (T.D.) of Kyle, SD; eleven grandchildren; two brothers Gary Wayne Ferguson, Sr. and Ronald Louis Ferguson, Sr. (Myreen) both of Kyle, SD; three sisters, Georgianna Ferguson Wells (Mike) of Simi Valley, California, LaDyne Ann Ferguson and Emmaline Ann Ferguson-One Horn (Ervin) both of Kyle, SD.
