RAPID CITY, S.D. – Lakota people have accomplished many notable feats and successes throughout its history. It has also been the subject of intense government efforts to both eradicate them from existence and then assimilate them into American society. A new museum set to open its doors Friday night will attempt to tell this complicated story.

When Adonis Saltes, an Oglala Lakota citizen and former Division I athlete, first dreamed up the idea for a place where Lakota people could tell their story, he saw it as a divine calling. The faith in this project has now come to fruition with a planned reception at 629 Main Street Rapid City, South Dakota 57701 on Friday night.

“There isn’t a place out there that is dedicated to telling the story of the Lakota people. The Lakota Dream museum will do that,” said Saltes.

Inside the museum are many notable exhibits. There is a fully preserved White Buffalo Calf in a display case, mock religious regalia and notes putting everything in the proper context. There is a special section devoted to athletes that features Olympic gold medalist Billy Mills, College volleyball standout Laura Schaad and current professional mixed martial artist David Michaud. All three are expected to be in attendance on Friday along with Jude Schimmel, Mayor Steve Allender and several tribal leaders.

Originally the museum had been interested in purchasing land where the Sitting Bull Caverns sat alongside one of South Dakota’s busiest routes heading to Mt. Rushmore, but the downtown location does give the public access to things that could not be viewed anywhere else.

Festivities will begin at 5pm on Friday, September 14 and will include a speech from Billy Mills. For more information please contact the Lakota Dream Museum’s Facebook page.
