RAPID CITY, S.D. – The 2019 LNI Archery event is in the books. The Rushmore Hall North in the Civic Center was packed with 265 student archers slinging arrows. The event continues to grow in the number of teams/schools participating. There was a record 34 teams entered in this years’ event.
Tim Villa, the coordinator, said that the popularity may be due to the unique Olympic format. The format has every archer scoring 30 arrows in the preliminary rounds. The top 12 scoring archers are then seeded into a finals bracket for side by side competition. The champion in each of the 12 divisions was determined by the highest total score of their 5 arrows shot at a life-sized 3D buffalo.
Cheyenne Eagle Butte (CEB) dominated both the Boys and Girls Middle School Genesis divisions. The CEB team has participated in numerous National and even International competitions. Their dedication to consistent practices showed in this spectacular performance.
Rockyford School continues to emphasize the use of traditional bows. Traditional bows include the use of any style of single string bow be it a Lakota, recurve or long bow. More schools are encouraged to pursue this pure form of the sport.
The Porcupine Archery Club, Oglala Lakota County School District and the Pine Ridge 4H office are the primary sponsors.
